About the Healdsburg Avenue Bridge

The 89-year-old span across the Russian River was completed in December 1921. At that time, the crossing provided a vital link for commerce and trade between northern California and the San Francisco Bay area. Since the construction of U.S. 101, the bridge has served as an alternative route for local traffic and as an entry way into Healdsburg.

Healdsburg Veterans' Memorial Beach Park lies adjacent to the bridge and is a popular place for residents and visitors to enjoy recreational activities.

About the Healdsburg Avenue Bridge Project

Healdsburg Avenue Bridge

Previous studies have indicated that the bridge is in need of attention and improvements. In early March 2010, the Healdsburg City Council initiated engineering and environmental studies to evaluate concepts to rehabilitate, replace, or relocate the bridge.

The bridge is almost 90 years old and does not meet current width or height requirements. In the past, concerns have been raised about the bridge's ability to withstand flood waters and seismic waves (earthquakes). It's the City's goal to consider all modes of transportation (vehicular, pedestrian and bicycles) over the river in order to determine the best way to serve the community's needs.

Initiating the engineering and environmental studies is the first step toward implementing the proposed project. Currently under way, these studies will determine how to best address the issues surrounding the bridge. A locally preferred concept for the project is currently scheduled to be selected by the City by mid-September of this year.

The City is dedicated to keeping the public informed about this process and learning the public's views on the project. The City held its first project open house on March 31, 2010, to inform and get input from the community. More public meetings will be held as this process continues. The City looks forward to your involvement.
